Steven Thomas Birchall, 82, passed away at his home in Alpine, Utah on May 31, 2022, attended to by his sweetheart, Vickie, and surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Oakland, California to Thomas Dargue Birchall and Lorna Crockett Birchall and grew up in Turlock, California where he wrestled for the Turlock High School Bulldogs. Steve valiantly served a 30-month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Brazilian Mission. While attending Brigham Young University, Steve met the love of his life, Victoria Ann Webster of Bel Air, California. On September 10, 1965, they married for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Steve had a deep and abiding love for and testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and His restored Gospel. He diligently taught these truths to his family and others by word and by deed. He served faithfully in the community and in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in various callings and assignments throughout his life. Most recently, Steve and Vickie served together to lift spirits and provide assistance to those in need during their five-year mission as managers of the Bishop’s Storehouse in Lindon, Utah. They were known to always offer “a little more” to brighten the day and lighten the load of each patron.
Steve loved horseback riding, camping, fishing, and hunting in the mountains with Vickie and his family. He deeply respected the beauties of Heavenly Father’s creations and instilled these feelings in his children by loving example. Steve’s experience with soccer while serving in Brazil and at BYU enabled him to become one of Alpine's first soccer coaches. He loved coaching his boys and watching his kids and grandkids play all sports.
Steve was the epitome of a devoted family man and patriarch. He adored Vickie and each member of their family. He took great care to ensure family gatherings occurred frequently and ended in family prayer. All in attendance, family members or friends, felt his genuine love and care. Steve possessed a special gift for truly seeking out the “one” befriending all.
His love for horses and the out-of-doors made Steve the “John Wayne” of Alpine. He and Vickie regularly rode their spirited Morgan horses in the Alpine Days parade. Last year, the city honored Steve and Vickie as the Grand Marshals of Alpine Days.
Steve is survived by his wife Victoria Birchall, and his children Nathan (Patricia) Birchall, Natalie (Mack) Dalley, Heath (Lori) Birchall, Julie (Aaron) Thornley, and Jace (Dani) Birchall; 27 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and siblings John Birchall, Paul Birchall, and Rebecca Dorius. Steve is preceded in death by his parents.
We welcome all to celebrate Steve’s wonderful life with us.
