Shirley Kendall Greenhalgh Smith passed away on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023. She was born on January 3rd, 1935 in Nephi, Utah to Thomas P. and Ada B. Kendall. Shirley loved her childhood and growing up in the small community, helping on her father's farm and learning how to be a homemaker in her mother's kitchen. She always called Nephi home.
She married Ned Greenhalgh and within the next few years became the mother of 5 daughters: Dawna French, Bonnie Taylor (Mike), Cheryl Brown (Mark), Julie Blackhurst, and Sam Bean (Ken). She later married Douglas K. Smith and their marriage was solemnized in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. They blended families with his 5 children: Jim Smith, Kaye Jorgensen, Barry Smith (Kathy), Kelley Jensen, and Lori Frampton (Kirk). Doug and Shirley were blessed with 38 years of marriage.
Shirley leaves a legacy of love consisting of 35 Grandchildren, 89 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren. This family was the most important thing in Shirley’s life. She and Doug created wonderful memories for them with an annual Christmas Party, enjoying the annual Kendall and Smith campouts for more than 45 years, and growing a huge garden to share with anyone who stopped by. Not to mention many meals that were cooked and shared at their table. Shirley was a wonderful cook and a hard worker, and she used those talents as a single mother when she started a Catering Business to support her girls. She did all the decorating, made the food, and did the custom sewing for weddings. With the girls working beside her, she taught her family the value of a good work ethic and how to just do what needed to be done.
Shirley was blessed with a lifetime of good friends. She made friends wherever she lived and many became forever friends that she continued to keep in touch with. Her life was focused around the principles of service and gratitude. There wasn’t a favor too big, or a need to fulfill that Shirley wasn’t right there with a willing heart and helping hands. Until her very last breath, she expressed gratitude for her blessings multiple times a day, and often shared “how extremely blessed I feel.”
Shirley was preceded in death by her sweet husband Doug, her loving parents, her sister Corrine Jenkins, and her brother Neil B. Kendall. Also, her son-in-law Chris L. Thomas, her granddaughter Cassie Lee, and her grandson Cale Jensen.
She is survived by her brothers, Clair Kendall and Edward (Kathleen) Kendall, along with her children and large extended family who truly love and adore her. She has always been the most kind, wise and strong matriarch of our family. She will be missed so much.
Shirley’s family would like to express a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the staff at Legacy Assisted Living in Spanish Fork who lovingly cared for our Mother.
And a loving thanks to our special friend Bonnie Ballard for loving and caring for Mom like she was your own.
