Robert Lewis Mills, 92, passed away on January 8, 2025, in the comfort of his home. His family finds solace in the thought of his joyful reunion with his beloved wife, Rosalyn, and their son, Dennis.
Robert (Bob) was born in Provo, Utah, on September 18, 1932 to Lewis Olson Mills and Elizabeth Belle Chapman. At age 2 the family relocated to California where he spent his childhood in Huntington Park and Southgate. He enjoyed visiting family in Utah at Strawberry Reservoir, Fairview and Mount Pleasant. He was baptized on November 3, 1940 as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was proud to be ordained an Elder on December 30, 1951, and a High Priest on December 14, 1986.
Bob graduated from Southgate High School in 1951 as an Industrial Arts major and continued to pursue a wide range of technical training. His education and skills led to a long and varied career, but his proudest accomplishment was the family he built with Rosalyn Dunbar, his high school sweetheart. Married on June 10, 1952, Bob and Rosalyn shared a love that spanned decades, raising three children-Dennis, Jana, and Tim-with devotion and faith. Their family was sealed, October 16, 1973 in the Los Angeles Temple. In the same temple, Bob was sealed to his parents, July 17, 1975.
Bob's professional life was as rich as his personal one. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1955, working as a photographer and darkroom technician, which sparked a lifelong passion for photography. After his military service, Bob's ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate electronics, video, and Two-way Radio shops in Southern California. His talents extended to working as a Hollywood projectionist and sound technician, where he formed lifelong friendships with industry legends like Burt Reynolds. Honored as Rookie Blocker of the Year in 1965, Bob had a blast competing in the Roller Derby during his career from 1964 to 1968.
From Hollywood, Bob ventured to Motorola as a Field Technical Representative for 20 years until retirement- cementing his reputation as a master problem solver. He designed, installed and maintained the radio communications system used in the Budweiser World Land Speed Record Rocket car 1979 - the first car to go the speed of sound. The communication system he developed was used in Indy and Nascar type vehicles. Bob was an avid amateur radio and two-way radio operator, call sign WA6ZEP. He worked on vital communication systems for the police and fire departments.
Bob and Rosalyn retired to American Fork, Utah in 1999. Here they became involved in multiple organizations. Bob contributed to American Fork City by providing audio and visual support for city events. Bob taught genealogy and computer graphics classes in the basement of his home and also served a service mission, helping prison inmates extract family history records.
He is preceded in death by his dear wife Rosalyn Dunbar, son Dennis Lee Mills, and siblings Ruth Bessac, Deloris Conklin, Beth Trembley and Gilbert Mills.
He is survived by his loving daughter Jana Loree Mills and devoted son Timothy Lewis Mills, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who will treasure his legacy. Robert lived a full and remarkable life, marked by his service, accomplishments and the pursuit of excellence.
