In Loving Memory of Robert Barnum Bentley
Robert Barnum Bentley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, on September 2, 2023, at the age of 91, at his residence in Lehi, Utah. Born on August 3, 1932, in Enterprise, UT, Robert led a fulfilling life filled with love, family, and a passion for sports and outdoor activities.
Robert grew up in Pioche, Nevada. He attended Lincoln County High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Janice Mathews. He also attended Dixie College and University of Nevada at Reno. His early work years were as an assayer in the mines around Pioche. He later worked in the grocery business before starting a successful career as a State Farm insurance agent.
Robert's love for sports was evident from a young age. He excelled in both baseball and football, and his talent led him to play semi-professional baseball. During his college years at Dixie State University, he continued his sporting journey by participating in both football and baseball, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege to witness him play.
Although his athletic achievements were impressive, Robert's most cherished role was that of a devoted husband and father. He was married to his beloved wife, Janice Mathews on February 16, 1951, in the St. George Temple, and together they raised six wonderful children: sons Robert, Rodney, and Donald Bentley, and daughters Diana Bentley, Juliann Marchant and Janet Evans. Robert found immense joy in supporting and watching his children and grandchildren participate in various activities, providing unwavering support and love throughout their endeavors.
Robert's dedication to his faith was unwavering. He served diligently in many church callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including a significant role as bishop and as a sealer at the Reno Nevada Temple. Robert and his cherished wife also embarked on a mission together in the Knoxville Tennessee mission, spreading love, hope, and the teachings of their faith during their time in service.
In his free time, Robert enjoyed immersing himself in the captivating world of Western books and movies, finding solace and excitement in the tales of cowboys and frontier life. Additionally, his love for cars was evident to all who knew him, a passion that brought him great joy and provided countless memorable moments.
He is survived by his beloved wife Janice Bentley, children, Robert (Kathy) Bentley, Rodney (Mary Ellen) Bentley, Donald (Ronda) Bentley, Juliann (Evan) Marchant, Janet (Ron) Evans, 36 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Afton Bentley, a daughter Diana Bentley, grandsons, Curtis Hunting, Andrew Evans, a great grandchild Joseph Marchant, his siblings Wayne Bentley and Roma Horlacher.
To honor and celebrate the life of Robert Barnum Bentley, there will be a public viewing held on September 8, 2023, at the Highland 21st Ward Chapel at 9:00 am, located at 9626 North 6800 West, Highland, Utah. Following the viewing, a funeral service will be held at the same location at 11:00 am. Interment will be in the Highland cemetery. These ceremonies will be a time for family, friends, and loved ones to come together, share cherished memories, and find solace in the presence of one another.
Robert's memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him, as his kind spirit, unwavering faith, and love for his family and friends left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace, forever remembered and celebrated as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
