Laurie Maxon

Lehi, UT – Laurie Rust Maxon, 67, passed away April 26th, 2021 at Pointe Meadows Health facility after a several months long battle with brain cancer.

She was born October 13th, 1953 in Spokane Washington, the daughter of the late Clyde and Wilma Rust. Laurie’s younger years were spent in a suburb of Portland, Oregon, eventually moving to Utah to attend BYU.  She is survived by her son Camden Maxon with his spouse Nikki and their children; granddaughters Elizabeth and Harper and grandson Caden. She is also survived by her 3 siblings, Paula Peterson, Carol Eldredge, and Craig Rust.

Laurie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she enjoyed serving in many capacities over the years and most recently as temple worker at the Denver temple. Her devout faith fostered a deep love for the Gospel. Those who had the pleasure to serve alongside her over the years recall many great memories. Her greatest friendships were fostered through these acts of service in her many callings.

Alie was extremely accomplished and shared her many talents of calligraphy, cross-stitch, and knitting with others. Laurie was also an accomplished baker, blessing many with her delicious desserts. She loved to play games, most notably she would gather with friends to play cards and still talked about these times up to the end. One cannot think of Laurie without thinking of books, she was a voracious reader, and her books were one of her greatest collections only paled in comparison by her collection of Westmoreland milk glass. Alie and her son shared an enormous love of sports and bonded over many a game throughout the years. Anytime the television was on, you could bet it was tuned to a sporting competition of some sort. In addition to watching sports, she was her son’s biggest supporter when it came to his sports, she wore the title of “Soccer Mom” proudly. She devoted a large portion of her life to encouraging Camden and ensuring he had every opportunity available.

Laurie was the epitome of the word “fighter” in her resilience, battling cancer three times. She was diagnosed at the age of 42 with two brain tumors, endured surgery, chemo, and radiation to fight the disease.  Five years later she was diagnosed with breast cancer, once again going through surgery, chemo, and radiation. Upon finding out she had stage 4 glioblastoma last February and told she only had 3 months to live, she decided to give the tumor a name, often referring him as the “little guy”. Alie once again steeled herself to go to war with this disease. She endured six hard months of chemo, often provoking the “little guy” which would result in horrendous side effects, contracting COVID-19 and then beating it, all the while maintaining grace and her contagious sense of humor throughout it all. Her team of doctors and nurses at her facility all fell in love with her and continued to be astonished by her tenacity in this fight for her life.

Those that are left behind find comfort in the knowledge that Alie is no longer in pain and has been reunited with loved ones. We are confident that she is for all intents and purposes, a ministering angel. Laurie leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. She embraced motherhood and magnified that calling beautifully allowing her son to fulfill his potential as an amazing husband and father. We celebrate all that Laurie was and leaves behind and rejoice in the knowledge that families are forever and that it’s never “good-bye” just “see you again”.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 30, 2021 at 2pm at Anderson and Sons Lone Peak Chapel, 6141 West 11000 North, Highland. A viewing will be held Friday from 12:45 to 1:45 pm at the same location. A Zoom link is provided below for those unable to attend the funeral in person.
