Karl Fugal

Karl Alan Fugal, husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and Utah State Aggie, passed away on February 15, 2025, in American Fork, Utah at age 85.

Karl was born December 3, 1939 to Jennie Burch and Bryan Christian Fugal, the second child and oldest son of what would become a family of eight children. He grew up in the Monkey Town area of Pleasant Grove, Utah, where there was open area to explore. Hunting rabbits and pheasants in the foothills and sledding on Mill Hill and Jackson's Hill were favorite activities.

Karl attended Central Elementary School and Pleasant Grove High School. In high school he was an accomplished athlete, was on the varsity basketball team, and played varsity football.

Karl attended Utah State University before serving in the United States Air Force for two years. After leaving the Air Force, Karl returned to USU and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics. Following graduation, he would relocate to Oregon for three years. In the fall of 1967, he returned to Logan to accept a position as mainframe systems programmer in the USU Computer Center. While employed there, he earned his Master of Computer Science degree via the Applied Statistics department in 1970. Over time, Karl would fill roles as programmer, assistant director, and retired as director of the Computer Center after more than 30 years on campus.

Karl had a lifelong interest in long haul trucking and driving. The years he lived in Logan, he was part-owner of a trucking company. He enjoyed making a run when he could.

Karl will always be remembered as a great and loving dad and grandpa; always patient, generous, helpful, kind, witty, and a good listener.

Karl is survived by his wife Judy; his son, Jan Christian Fugal, and daughters Sara Melissa Marshall and Shelley Dawn (Eric) Simons; five siblings, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Karl was preceded in death by his parents Bryan and Jennie; sister Kristine (Hughes) and brother Sherman Lynn Fugal.
