Jess Green

Mayor Jess Lynn Green passed away on January 6, 2023.

Jess was born March 24, 1939, in American Fork, Utah, to Marion and Mariam Tanner Green. He attended American Fork High School, Officer Candidate School, and Brigham Young University. Between high school and college, Jess served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Central States. He was especially proud to serve his country as a Green Beret in the Army National Guard and attained the rank of sergeant.

In 1971, Jess married Sondra Read (marriage solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple, August 1985). Together they raised six children while he worked at American Fork Jr. High as an administrator. He considered the junior high students to be "his kids," and he shared thousands of Tic Tacs and witticisms with them over his decades-long career.

Jess's passion was politics. He loved his hometown and was mayor of American Fork from 1994 to 1998. He also served on the American Fork City Council, City Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustments, and he was significantly involved in developing the Central Utah Project for northern Utah County. During his tenure as mayor, he was proud to usher in a new city library and was key to the completion of the Mt. Timpanogos Utah LDS temple. In his spare time, Jess was an avid reader and rare book dealer.

He is survived by his wife, Sondra, his children, Jennifer (Shaun) Delliskave, Jess, Daniel (Cheyenne), Jared (Evelyn), Michelle Green, Melanie Green (Derek Allred), and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Helen, Clayton, Vera, Vivian Reimschiissel, David, Joy Olson, and Dallin.

A viewing will be held at Anderson & Sons Mortuary in American Fork on Friday, January 13, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 14, from 9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 14, at 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary.
