Janis Francis Stoney passed away on April 3, 2023 in her home surrounded by her family.
Janis was born March 17, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She lived in Pine, AZ for the early years of her life and her family moved back to Boulder City, NV. where she grew up and graduated from Boulder City High School in 1959.
After high school, Janis attended BYU but moved to Hawaii before finishing her final semester of her degree in Fashion Design. While in Hawaii, she loved to surf and even was able to surf the famous North Shore. When she returned to Las Vegas she worked as a legal secretary to the patent attorney at Titanium Metals Corporation of America in Henderson, NV where she met and eventually married Stephen Stoney on May 16, 1964. They were stationed with the US Army in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1964-1967. They moved back to Vegas where they raised 5 children. Janis devoted her life to her children and family.
Janis was an avid sports fan, especially when it comes to basketball and football. She worked at UNLV in the early 1980s to help the basketball team transition to the new Thomas and Mack Center. She loved working with the season ticket holders and rubbing shoulders with the coach, Jerry Tarkanian and the players.
Following her divorce in 1993, Janis went to work as a legal secretary for the Public Defender's Office in Las Vegas. She had a major administrative role in setting up the 4th Drug Court program in the United States and helped it grow into an amazing program. After retiring in 2005, she bought a home in American Fork, Utah to live closer to some of her children and grandchildren where she has lived for 18 years.
Janis was a steadfast member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a very strong testimony of her Savior Jesus Christ, and His Atoning sacrifice, our Heavenly Father's Plan of Salvation, and eternal families. She served in many capacities.
She was a very talented, creative and artistic person. Heirloom sewing was her passion. Janis enjoyed designing and making dresses and quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved teaching and sharing her skills and techniques with others.
Janis is survived by her brother John (Birgitta) Francis; her children: Putney Kemp, David (Kimberly) Stoney, Suzanne (Robert) Ruchti, Xarissa (Richard) Jardine, Janette (Michael) Kennedy, Joseph (Kimberly) Stoney, 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her 2 infant children, Ginger and Stephen Richard Stoney. As well as her parents, Richard Llewellyn and Beryl Randall Francis, her son-in-law, Rob Ruchti and her beloved dog and companion, Funshine.
A viewing will be held in her honor, Thursday, April 6, 2023 from 6:30-7:30 at Anderson & Sons Mortuary 49 E. 100 N. American Fork, UT 84003. A family graveside service will be held in the Boulder City, Nevada Cemetery. Please share a memory on Janis's tribute wall.
