Jan Birk, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community member, passed away on January 6, 2025, at the age of 75. He died peacefully in his sleep, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, love for his family, and commitment to his community.
Born on November 6, 1949, Jan lived a full and varied life, contributing to society through many different vocations. He worked as a bricklayer, banker, janitor, and politician. His career was diverse, driven by a deep desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Jan was also an accomplished proctor and a passionate writer, publishing several times in national newspapers in Denmark. He held a bachelor's degree in history, which was one of his great passions throughout his life.
Jan came to know Jesus Christ as a young boy when he and other family members joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his service as a Church missionary in Denmark in the early 1970s, Jan met his eternal companion, Carol Watson.
Jan's devotion to his family was evident in everything he did. He was a loving husband to Carol Kay Watson, whom he was married to until her passing in November 2023. Together, they raised eleven children: April, Amy, Amanda, Anya, Anne-Marie, Adam, Aaron, Ammon, Andreas, Abel, and Angel, who passed away at birth. Jan found immense joy in being a grandfather of thirty-eight grandchildren.
Jan was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol, their daughter Angel, their grandson James, and his parents and siblings. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends who will miss him dearly.
In addition to his professional and family life, Jan was an avid reader and writer. His curiosity and thirst for knowledge were matched only by his love for spending time with those he cherished. He found great joy in the simple things, always appreciating the company of his loved ones, whether it was a family gathering or quiet time spent reflecting on life.
Jan's funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. at 890 N Heritage Hills Drive, Alpine, Utah. His family invites all who knew and loved him to join them in celebrating his life.
Jan's memory will live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him. He was a man who lived with purpose, love, and an unwavering commitment to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the honor of crossing his path.
