Howard Dale James, 82, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, surrounded by loving family. He was born on August 9, 1942, in Oak Hill, West Virginia, to Thomas William James and Elizabeth Mae James (nee Shuck).
Howard proudly served in the United States Army, completing his service in Thailand as an accountant in the Comptroller's Office. Upon returning home, he moved to Arlington, Virginia, where he met Linda, the love of his life. After a whirlwind three-month courtship and her proposal, they married on July 10, 1970, embarking on a beautiful and blessed 54-year journey together.
While attending George Mason University, Howard worked as a taxicab driver in Washington, D.C., a role that left a lasting impression on his driving style. He graduated with honors in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and began a successful career as a commodities broker. Over the years, he worked for many brokerage firms, ultimately retiring from Wells Fargo.
Howard's greatest joy was his family. He welcomed three children and delighted in cheering them on as they participated in youth sports, graduated college, and built families of their own. This passion extended to his grandchildren, of whom he was their biggest supporter and proudest fan. The umpires and referees, however, may not have always appreciated this passion.
Known for his humor and wit, Howard loved sharing jokes-often pulling out printed ones from his wallet-and wasn't at all shy about repeating favorites. His generosity was equally memorable; he frequently gave to those in need, whether they were friends or complete strangers, sharing the financial blessings he felt God had entrusted to him.
Howard was a lifelong New York Yankees fan, a love that he passed down and shared with his son. He was a sports enthusiast who could be found watching almost any live sporting event--but he especially loved to support the Washington Capitals and University of Virginia Cavaliers.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife Linda; his children Jessica (Glen) Theiss, Kelly (Greg) Jones, and Chris (Tracy) James; and his cherished grandchildren Dylan, Branden, Carson, Tyler, and Ashley Jones, Cameron and Carter Theiss, and a granddaughter James expected soon, as well as his dear sister, Clara Rushing. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas James, Jr.
Howard's fierce love for his family and his unwavering generosity will forever be remembered by those who knew him.
The family will welcome friends at 9681 N 6900 W, Highland, UT, 84003, January 18th from 10:00-10:45 am, with a funeral service at 11:00 am. A private burial will follow. Arrangements are being handled by Anderson Mortuary, American Fork, Utah.
