Cole Bradley Merrill, 16, our loving son, brother, and friend was called home July 7, 2018 after a tragic bridge jumping accident at the Jordan River in Lehi, UT.
Cole was born on August 19, 2001 in Orem, UT to Samuel and Carla Merrill. He was the third of four children and spent the majority of his life in Alpine, UT. Cole was active and athletic, and was involved in many sports and outdoor activities, excelling at everything he tried. He was a member of the Lone Peak Football and Swim Teams and was a two-time state champion swimmer. When not busy with swim or football practice, Cole could be found enjoying the outdoors with friends and family: going on hikes, rappelling, floating the river, camping, fishing, skiing, boating, rock climbing, cliff jumping, or Jeeping in his iconic red Wrangler, Betsy. With his adventurous, fun-loving soul and a motto of "Full Send or No Send" Cole gave his all in everything he did and always lived life to the fullest.
Cole was a fun-loving young man who was always making others smile. Whether through cracking jokes, busting a move, serving others, surprising his parents with ridiculous school pictures, or just with the sheer infectious nature of his smile, Cole was one who would brighten any room and lighten any situation.
Cole was extremely service oriented, always looking out for others and actively seeking opportunities to serve. Carrying others' equipment on hikes, setting up rappels, packing food and drinks for all, and helping everyone navigate routes only he could conquer were a few of the many ways Cole blessed and helped others. He was always lifting, whether physically up a cliff or a building side, or spiritually and emotionally, Cole was truly a friend to all. Always caring and mindful of others, he never missed an opportunity to give someone a ride to school or take them out for a treat to celebrate a special occasion or a Snapchat streak. Everyone lucky enough to meet Cole could say they were better because of it. With his kind demeanor, fun-loving attitude, and devilish good looks, Cole was easy to love and someone people couldn't help but be drawn to. Not capable of being angry or holding a grudge, he was quick to forgive and happily did so with a smile. Cole was looked up to by so many and set an example for all.
Cole was a natural born leader and always led the way in order to be in a position where he could continually assist others. Whether being the first one down a rappel or the fastest to float down the river, he always turned back to help others and actively sought to lighten the loads of all who kept his company. In addition, Cole was a spiritual beacon and a light to all. It wasn't uncommon for Cole to plan early morning temple trips with his friends, or to go above and beyond in his church callings. Righteous and active preparation to serve a mission was a large part of Cole's life and there is no doubt that he is continuing in his faithful service of the Lord.
Cole's legacy is that of going about and doing good always. The impact he had on us will forever be felt and never forgotten. His Christlike attitude and contagious smile will continue to influence our lives for good. We honor Cole not only by remembering him, but by acting as he would and treating others as he did. May we all remember to Smile Like Cole.
Cole is survived by his loving family. His parents Sam and Carla, his siblings Sammy (Tessa), Jaden (Ryan), and Riley.
