It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cheryl K. Wellner, a beloved teacher, mother, and friend, who passed away on December 22, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on September 6, 1943, in Peoria, Illinois, Cheryl dedicated her life to nurturing the minds of her students and instilling in them a love for learning that went beyond the classroom walls.
Cheryl was born in Peoria, IL to Clifford Cunningham and Margaret Guthneck. Cheryl married George "Jack" Wellner Jr of Peoria, IL on September 1, 1963. Cheryl and Jack met in grade school where their close friendship endured to a lifetime of love and companionship to each other.
Cheryl earned her Master's Degree in Special Education from Bradley University and went on to inspire countless young people through her passion for education. Her kindness, wisdom, and infectious enthusiasm made her a cherished figure among her students and fellow educators alike. A public school teacher first in Redbank, New Jersey, and then Naperville, Illinois, Cheryl believed in the power of compassion and understanding, always taking the time to listen and offer guidance to those in need. Specially trained in dyslexia, she turned her attention to one-on-one tutoring and opened The Learning Center, where for many years she helped countless students of all ages from across the Chicagoland area. She also worked part-time in finance with her son Andrew.
Cheryl had a deep love of animals and her cats in particular. She had a talent for decorating. She was an amazing storyteller and had a story for everything. Her parents were an important part of her life and she had a deep appreciation for their influence in her life. Jack was the love of her life and he had an unwavering commitment to her from a very young age. She also found joy in being a mother and grandmother.
Cheryl is survived by her children, Andrew (Stacy) Wellner of Provo, Eric Wellner and Susan Heffern of California, Brian (Regan) Wellner of Rock Island, Illinois, grandchildren, Andrew Wellner, Jr., Abby (Brendon) Black, Hannah Marshall, David Wellner, Rory Wellner, Christian Wellner, Lucy Wellner, Caeli Wellner, Vivian Wellner, Benedict Wellner, Damien Wellner, great-grandchildren Hazel Black and Ruby Black.
Cheryl is preceded in death by her husband, George Wellner Jr, and her parents Clifford and Margaret Guthneck Cunningham.
As we remember Cheryl, we reflect on her sense of humor, her laughter, and the countless lives she touched with her grace. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know her.
