Carl Winget

October 19, 1934 — November 16, 2023

Carl Winget, 89, passed away on November 16, 2023, in Lehi, Utah.

Carl was born on October 19, 1934, in South Bend, Nebraska, to Burt Eugene Winget and Lavina Elnora Calder Winget. Carl married Joanne Winget on April 8, 1967, in Elko, Nevada.

When he was a very young child, he was so small that he couldn't see over the snow drifts; because of this he got his nickname, "Shorty" which stuck his whole life even though he grew to be six feet tall.

He became an instant father to 2 girls the day he married, and he claimed them as his own immediately. One of his favorite jokes was to tell people how old his oldest daughter was and then say how long he'd been married and add, "Took me long enough, didn't it?" He loved his children and worked hard all his life to provide for them. He never stopped worrying about his children. In his later years he kept trying to win the lottery, not because he wanted the money for himself, but because he was trying to make sure his family would be taken care of. When his kids were younger, he loved to take them camping and fishing when he could. His family was the focus of his life and he loved them more than anything. He loved going deer hunting with family and friends and made sure he was home for this every year even though he was gone a lot driving his truck. He never shot a deer, but he loved spending this time with family and friends.

Shorty was a big tease and loved to laugh. Nobody thought he was funnier than he did himself. His laugh was infectious. He was generous with everybody and made friends everywhere he went.

Shorty served in the Air Force for 14 years

Shorty is survived by his wife, Joanne; children, Julie (Todd) Fraughton, Diana (Mike) McCormick, John (Terri) Winget, and Dawn (Travis) Shireman; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Lanora Lee (Monty) Laws. Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Burt and Lavina; and siblings, Bill Winget, Betty Jo Foreman, and Corinne Hertzel.
