Born November 1, 1939 to Robert and Luana Smith, Alan is the oldest of five children (his sibling Dennis, Rayola, Ronald and Delane).
He loved his childhood and youth growing up in Alpine, Utah. He graduated from American Fork High School in 1958, and also earned his master's degree from BYU in 1968.
After serving in the Hawaii Honolulu Mission, Alan married Susanne Moyle in the Manti Temple on August 22, 1962. They are the proud parents of five children: Mike (Julie); Matt (Teri); Jim (Becky); Taylor (Natalie); Kira (Adam) and love their 15 grandchildren.
Although Alan lead his family and geology career to Denver, Colorado and Houston, Texas, he loved being a citizen of the world. He enjoyed chasing and leading energy projects in Asia, Australia and the Pacific Rim. He was invigorated with these projects and more importantly loved the people he worked with among these projects.

nd
